out of 5: SI's still got it
lawhorn, July 26, 2003
I have been a subscriber to SI for 18 years (since my
junior year in high school). Some may be disappointed
with the magazine because it is essentially the
BusinessWeek of the sports world. But just as we have
CNBC for real-time business info, we have ESPN (or CNNSI)
for real-time sports info. That's not what SI is
supposed to be - never was. SI fills the role of
recapping the major developments in the sports world,
while adding a great mix of some feature articles (often
athlete profiles or controversial issues), "hit-and-run"
facts and figures, as well as the obligatory editorials.
When I consider what I look forward to each week, it's
actually not the wrap-ups of major sports events or some
high profile story. It's the "little things":
-the provocative close-up pictures at the beginning
-Letters to the Editor (maybe the only ones I read of
any mag)
-Go figure (intriguing numbers that tell a story)
-Rick Reilly's last page column (he has a warm,
conversational style that's almost mesmerizing)
Yes, it's true. You'll read more about baseball,
football and basketball than you will about swimming,
golf, or extreme sports. But accept SI for what it is -
a great way to stay current, go deeper than the daily
sports page, and be entertained. The price offered here
is cheaper than my own subscription - it's also cheaper
than a cup of coffee and lasts longer. So if you are
even half a sports fan, you should be treating yourself
to a weekly SI.

5 out of 5: Best sports
magazine in print
by mattjoe, July 16, 2003
Regardless of your feelings on the annual swimsuit
issue, Sports Illustrated is the best sports magazine
out there. Great reporting, commentary and photos on all
major sports. An amazing irony is that being featured on
the cover is the last place many athletes and teams want
to be as it seems to consistently predict the team bound
for a big loss. Some call it the SI curse, but just
reading the magazine is still a blessing.

out of 5: A Magazine that is part of American
Life
by johnmeeks, June 20, 2003
The beginnings of SI are well known, and it is a tribute
to the magazine that it has done so well over the years.
It maintains a sufficiently literary reputation so that
it is varied and interesting, yet is down to earth
enough to cater to hardcore, stats oriented fan. Since
the advent of the internet and instant information, it
has changed over time to be more feature oriented, but
with the quality of writers they have this is a good
thing. Most of the other sports magazines are too
limited either in scope or talent.
Oh, and once a year, an issue dedicated to women in
swimsuits shows up. Can't beat it. |

5 out of 5 : A great sports magazine
Lisa Mills, March 10, 2003
SI has a lot of really good features week after week.
There are always intense action pictures of all sports,
not just the major ones. For those who love sports, this
is one of the best ones around for interesting
commentary and pictures in every issue. I enjoy the
fascinating stories from off the field and how sports is
a part of life. |

5 out of 5: The cadillac of sports magazines
jmelgren, March 25 2005
My grandmother gave me a subscription to SI when i was 9
years old and I've been getting it ever since (24
years). it's the one piece of literature I read
cover-to-cover every week (no matter how bust I am).
What I love most about it is the quality of writing. the
special interest stories are interesting,
thought-provoking, passionate, insightful, and without
fear. Some of the best stories I've ever read have come
out of this magazine (the BC college hoops scandal and
the Greg Lemond comeback story are two that come to
mind). if you care about sports and the stories behind
the athletes, this is the mag to get. |
