5 out of 5:
Amazing Sports Photos
lzeitlin, March 17, 2005
There are other sports magazines in the world, but none
of them have the amazing quality of the photos that
Sports Illustrated does. The first part of the magazine
has a whole section devoted to two page spread sports
photos. Close up shots of athletes going all out, of
fumbles, of the raw emotion bleeding through facial
expressions. This is the stuff you can never see or
appreciate on TV (even when they play it back in slo-mo).
Sports Illustrated easily adds another dimension to your
favorite sports.

5 out of 5: The
best sports magazine in the world...,
stefanie, March 15, 2005
I've been an off-and-on subscriber to SI since I was a
kid. I've grown to love the magazine and idolize a few
of the staff writers. Despite being the best, the
magazine is far from perfect. Lately, I've found that
many of the articles deal with things that I, and many
sports fans, probably don't care about. And they give
too much coverage to pro football when it's in season,
even though I've noticed that the football coverage is
among the worst in the magazine. There are a few writers
who I can't stand (die Austin Murphy!) and some who
think they are better than they really are (Rick
Reilly), and some who are underappreciated (Steve Rushin).
However, some of the finest reading I've ever done has
been in Sports Illustrated. There are some stories that
stick with you for years. SI beats the crap out of the
terrible ESPN magazine, which seems more interested in
comedy than in sports.

out of 5: Glory Daze
mattyork28, March 07, 2005
When I was growing up, my older brother, used to keep
back issues of Sports Illustrated under his bed. Since
he and I shared a bedroom, it was very easy for me to
take a look at all of those issues he decided to hold on
to. I tended to especially enjoy reading the magazine
during football season. Ah, the days of Joe Montana,
Walter Payton, Jim McMahon, and John Elway, there was
nothing like it. I remember being impressed with the
vivid on field photography, straight talk about the
world of sports, and its look at all of the stats with
each sport.
With those memories in mind, after years of buying it at
times on the news stand, I just signed up for a
subscription. Over the years SI has constantly set the
standard for covering sports on and off any field. With
Football season right around the corner, and sports
stars always making news, I can't wait to get the first
issue. Thankfully, the swimsuit issue follows, soon
after the gridiron game ends its season. Recommended.

out of 5: Sports Staple,
tj696, February 28, 2005
Sports Illustrated is mostly dedicated to football,
baseball, and basketball. The other sports get in there,
too when there's something going on, but these staples
are in every issue. The editorials are usually very
amusing, and "The Show" is really funny. Even though I
don't really follow most of the things that are going on
in the sports world, that humor page keeps me up to date
without being boring. Every so often there is a really
good feature article about something obscure or
different like free diving, or aerobatics. Also, don't
ever *read* the swimsuit issue. I guess the publishers
figure that most people won't do this so they don't
bother to come up with much. The fantasy/fiction in the
last issue was so horrible that I couldn't bear to
finish it.

Folks, to get ANY magazine at that price is a deal, and
to get a magazine like SI at such a reduced rate is even
better. This is NOT a magazine with about 10 pages in
it. This is a magazine that is very thick with in-depth
sports coverage. And for you gentlemen who love
beautiful women, one must not forget SI's annual
Swimsuit Edition. It features some of the most beautiful
women in the world. If you want to keep ahead of what's
in sports, if you want to learn from the experts on the
who what's when where and how's of sports, this is a
magazine for you. It covers all the major sports and
most of the non traditional sports. |
